She also visited the country at least several times while a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a 2020\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200801155420\/https:\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/07\/karen-bass-cuba-venceremos-brigade\/614662\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a>\u00a0with The Atlantic, Bass spoke further about her first trip to Cuba and reportedly said she understood that Castro&#8217;s Cuba wasn&#8217;t a &#8220;utopia.&#8221; She told the magazine, &#8220;I didn&#8217;t have any illusions that the people in Cuba had the same freedoms I did. I came home and was protesting everything; I knew that the Cuban people didn&#8217;t have the ability to do that.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bass faced scrutiny over a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legistorm.com\/stormfeed\/view_rss\/935729\/member\/2733\/title\/rep-bass-statement-on-the-passing-of-fidel-castro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0she released when Castro died in November 2016 referring to him as &#8220;Comandante en Jefe,&#8221; a phrase Castro&#8217;s government used to praise him.
